As Chairman, Stuart brings unparalleled experience in Financial Services. Alongside his undoubted calm, he brings an unstintingly supportive, thoughtful and ambitious energy to the Board.


Stuarts’ career has been entirely in Retail and Commercial Banking sector. Having spent 17 years with Nat West, progressing through the ranks of the Branch network and ultimately specialising in ‘large ticket’ Corporate Finance, Stuart followed with 19 years at the Nationwide Building Society, 13 of which were as a main Board Director, where he was successful across a number of roles. He joined Metro Bank as a non-Exec Director at its inception in 2009, going on to give 11 years’ service through which he served on, and chaired, a number of board committees.


During his 47 years in the industry, Stuart has worked alongside the PRA, FCA, FRC and Treasury Select Committee. He was Chairman of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, Chairman of Financial Services Sector Skills Council and Chairman of Standard Financial Services PLC


Stuart was special advisor to the Treasury Select Committee reviewing the failure of HBOS, and was appointed Chairman & Chief Executive of Chelsea Building Society, successfully restructuring and facilitating the merger with the Yorkshire Building Society.


In his spare time, Stuart has been a member of The British Sports Trust, a Director of Northampton Rugby Club and is currently Chairman of Minchinhampton Golf Club.

Stuart claims to keep himself fit in order to play better golf, but mostly it’s to keep up with his beloved grandchildren. He lives in the Cotswolds with his wife Sue.
